Scams Aware

Macau scams/ Phone scams

You receive calls from someone pretending to be from banks or government authorities (could be police, the court, Bank Negara Malaysia, income tax office etc) to trick you into transferring money to third party accounts.

Detect Signs

+ calls from authorities using private numbers, or may impersonate official numbers
+ make you panic so that you may be tricked easily, such as telling you that you have unpaid taxes or committed tax fraud; or that your bank account is frozen/hacked.
+ pressure you to urgently transfer funds to third party accounts to safeguard your interest or money, or will usually be given a very short window to settle the payment or fear of being prosecuted.
+ you are being warned of not speaking to any one due to the confidentiality of ongoing investigations.

How to stay safe

+ always verify the caller’s identity, or call back the government office using a number from a trusted source
+ do not transfer your money to unknown bank accounts as authorities will not ask you to immediately transfer funds to another account.
